I Love TV Themes

And here’s the theme song from another Chris Lilley show, We Can Be Heroes. It predated Summer Heights High, and actually features a character from the latter, Ja’mie (does this make Summer Heights High a spinoff? Yes.). This tune was composed by Bryony Marks, and I think it works with the sequence in a way that’s subtly very ironic.

The lyrics here are children singing, again and again, “G’day,” the Australian casual greeting. The clips are of various Australians posing for the camera while they do diverse activities. It is all meant to look like a cheesy ad for Australia (the series concerned the actually-real Australian of the Year Award) Look how awkward almost all these people look. The swimmer is so uncomfortable just standing there. The farmer gets a bug in his face. One of the children tries to high five the other, but the other’s too distracted by the camera. It comes across like a one-take soulless job, which I believe is intentional.

The show’s great, by the way. Watch it.
